A STUDY TRIP FROM BERLIN TO THE U.S.
SYNOPSIS
The Documentary ECHEOS OF REMEMBRANCE chronicles the journey
of sixteen young remembrance workers with their teacher from
Theodor Heuss Community School in Berlin as they embarked
on a transformative experience to the U.S . state of Oklahoma in June 2023.
During their visit, they immersed themselves in the American
culture of remembrance surrounding the Holocaust and Black history,
broadening their perspectives on their own remembrance efforts back in Germany.
The Remember working group, "AG Erinnern," actively involved
in remembrance initiatives in Germany since 2015, undertook this journey
to the U.S. to gain profound insights into American history and memorial work.
The initiative was led by Dr. Karlos K. Hill,
a Black History Study Professor at Oklahoma University (OU),
and Sabeth Schmidthals, founder of the Remember working group.
Over the course of 10 days, the students explored various places of remembrance,
such as the Dallas Holocaust and Human rights Museum
and the Greenwood Disctrict in Tulsa. They connected with activists such as
Marilyn Luper, Michael Korenblit, Kristi Orisabiyi Williams,
Rabbi Vered Harris, and Fulton Washington, also known as Mr. Wash,
to deepen their understanding of American remembrance work.
The film unfolds through the reflections of these young individuals,
providing a nuanced portrayal of remembrance work today in both the U.S. and Germany.
